From increased government debt to lack of financial freedom, the issue of ‘big government’ is one that’s deeply debated and often misunderstood. Yet, it’s time we look at the deeper implications of these regulations and decide if they are really solving the problems they set out to address.
Throughout history, the greatest leaps of human progress have come as a result of individual freedom, not central control. Take, for instance, the culture of Renaissance Florence, which was marked by unprecedented economic growth and artistic expression. It was only possible because of a free market system, one free from government interference. The Medici family, for example, were key players in the civic and economic revival that took place in Florence at the time.
The same can be said of the Dutch Golden Age, during the 17th and 18th centuries. During this era, the Netherlands experienced rapid economic growth, thanks mainly to their laissez-faire attitudes. Individuals were free to trade, innovate, and create, leading to a booming economy.
Experts also point to the increase of monetisation and international trade as contributing to the rise in economic growth during this period. These markets could only reach their maximum potential because of the lack of blocking legislature, allowing individuals to move their capital freely in order to maximise their profits. This was the result of an attitude towards giving the people their freedom.
When it comes to modern examples, it’s clear to see that allowing individuals to be free carries economic and civil benefits. We need only look to the city of Hong Kong to see a successful example. The region has consistently ranked as the most economically free in the world and is currently the third largest financial hub. This was possible due to their low taxation, minimal government interference, and freedom to trade and innovate.
Liberty, not government control, is the true solution to the problems caused by excessive regulation. In a free market system, corporations, governments and individuals can work symbiotically to create a prosperous and innovative society. Let’s ditch the big government and their restrictive regulations, for liberty is the real key to progress.
